Empty Container Shortage at Karachi: What Exporters Should Ask at Booking

Peak weeks out of Pakistan often fail on equipment, not on vessel schedules. A booking number without an empty container is a placeholder, not a shipment.

Why Empties Dry Up

• Import imbalance (more exports than inbound boxes on some strings)
• Boxes stuck in detention / slow inland returns
• Carrier preference for certain trades and sizes (20′ vs 40′ HC)
• Depot repositioning lag between Karachi, Qasim, and Punjab ICDs

Questions That Separate Real Bookings From Hope

Ask your forwarder before you finish packing:

• Is empty confirmed at which depot — and for which date?
• Is the booking space-and-equipment or space-only?
• If the nominated size is unavailable, what substitutes are acceptable (40′ vs 40′ HC)?
• Can we pick up inland, or only at port / CFS?

“We will arrange” without a depot and date is not confirmation.

Interior Exporters Feel It First

Punjab factories cannot wait for a box that exists only in Karachi folklore. Empty must be:

1. Released by the line / depot 2. Picked up by a truck that can reach the mill on time 3. Stuffed, sealed, and returned within free time

Miss any step and demurrage / detention starts while the vessel still looks “booked.”

Practical Alternatives When Equipment Is Tight

• Earlier booking with forecast volumes shared weekly
• Flexible sailing (next string) once empty is real
• Size substitution if the buyer and stuffing plan allow
• LCL for small lots when FCL equipment is the blocker (accept CFS cut-offs)

We will not sell a sailing week we cannot equip. When empties are tight, we say so and propose workable options — different size, terminal, or week — instead of a polite fiction.

If your production calendar is firm, ask for empty confirmation in writing with depot and pickup date. That one line saves more shipments than another rate quote.
