Karachi Export SI Cut-Offs and VGM Timing Shippers Get Wrong

·4 min read·MTX Team

Shipping instructions and VGM run on different clocks than gate-in — how Pakistani exporters should reverse-plan Karachi and Port Qasim cut-offs without last-hour panic.

Cargo can be gated in on time and still miss the vessel because shipping instructions (SI) or VGM arrived late. On Karachi and Port Qasim exports, physical cut-off and document cut-off are not the same clock.

Three Clocks, Not One

1. Gate-in / CFS receiving — when the box or cargo must be physically present 2. VGM submission — verified gross mass to the carrier / terminal 3. SI / B/L instructions — final parties, marks, freight terms, and special clauses

Treat a single “Friday cut-off” verbal as incomplete. Ask for the written sheet with each timestamp.

What Usually Goes Wrong

  • Factory finishes stuffing and assumes documents can wait until Monday
  • VGM Method 1 weighbridge queues ignored until the same afternoon as SI
  • Consignee spelling still changing after SI “final”
  • LC-driven description changes after the line has locked the draft B/L

Each of those creates amendments, rolls, or weekend storage — not a free fix.

Reverse-Plan From the Earliest Clock

Work backwards from the earliest of SI, VGM, and gate-in for *that* booking. Interior cargo from Faisalabad, Lahore, or Sialkot needs road buffer before the earliest clock, not after.

For LCL, CFS receiving is often earlier than FCL terminal cut-off — consol partners will not wait for one late shipper.

MTX Desk Habit

We send cut-off sheets with bookings and flag when SI or VGM is still open after cargo is moving. If your last shipment made gate-in but missed SI, change the document owner and deadline in the booking SOP — not only the complaint after roll.

Ask for SI and VGM deadlines in writing when space is confirmed. That one email prevents most “we thought we had until sailing day” failures.
