Letter of Credit Shipments: Why Banks Reject Documents (and How to Avoid It)

·5 min read·MTX Team

LC freight from Pakistan fails on B/L dates, goods descriptions, and late document sets — a practical checklist for exporters before the vessel sails.

Letter of credit (LC) shipments fail more often on documents than on vessels. Banks examine paper against the credit — not against what “everyone in the trade understood.” Pakistani exporters lose days (and sometimes the deal) on avoidable discrepancies.

The Rejections We See Most

  • On-board date after the latest shipment date in the LC
  • Goods description on B/L / invoice / packing list not matching LC wording
  • Consignee, notify, or port of discharge spelling variants vs LC
  • Missing or late insurance / certificate set when the LC requires them
  • Partial shipment or transshipment when the credit prohibits it
  • Weight / package count mismatches across the document set

Forwarders do not “fix” an LC by rewriting the B/L to wishful language. We issue transport documents that match what was booked and what customs sees.

Before Cargo Moves

1. Share the full LC (or at least the transport clauses) with your forwarder and broker — not a one-line “ship under LC” 2. Confirm latest shipment date and presentation period against realistic cut-offs at Karachi / Port Qasim 3. Lock the exact goods description that will appear on commercial invoice and B/L 4. Decide original B/L vs telex / sea waybill against what the credit allows 5. Name who collects originals and who presents to the bank

If production already slipped, amend the LC before sailing. Post-facto amendments after a late on-board date are harder and more expensive.

Coordination on Sail Week

  • VGM, gate-in, and GD timing must still meet terminal rules — LC urgency does not override cut-offs
  • Ask for draft B/L before vessel departure when the credit is strict
  • Check that freight payment terms on the B/L (prepaid / collect) match the Incoterm and LC

After Sailing

Assemble the document set the same week, not when the buyer chases. Discrepant documents can still move cargo commercially — but they weaken bank payment certainty. Know whether your buyer will accept discrepancies in writing before you gamble.

MTX Role on LC Freight

We align booking data, B/L drafts, and milestone dates with the credit clauses you share. We cannot rewrite a credit or guarantee bank acceptance — that sits with your bank and beneficiary diligence. What we can do is stop the most common self-inflicted mismatches before originals are released.

If your last LC set came back with three discrepancies, send us the credit clauses with the next booking request. Fixing the checklist once is cheaper than amending every shipment.
