Detention
Charges when you keep a carrier container outside the terminal past free time.
Definition
Detention is the charge for keeping a carrier’s container outside the terminal beyond allowed free time — for example, after gate-out for delivery/unstuffing, or holding an empty too long before return.
If demurrage is “box stuck in port,” detention is “box stuck in your custody on the road or at the warehouse.”
Good detention hygiene means the warehouse, labour, and empty-return plan exist before the truck gates out. Pulling a box early “to be safe” often backfires when unstuffing capacity is not ready the same day.
Pakistan-specific notes
Practical context for WeBOC, Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Port Qasim Authority (PQA), and Pakistan Single Window (PSW) where relevant.
- Karachi and Port Qasim imports often face detention when factories unstuff slowly or empties queue at return depots.
- Export empties picked early for factory stuffing can also burn detention if cargo-ready dates slip.
- Carrier tariffs differ; always confirm combined demurrage/detention free time for that line and equipment.
- Export factory stuffing calendars should include empty pickup lead time, not only the sailing date on the booking.
Common mistakes
- Budgeting only demurrage and forgetting detention after gate-out.
- Picking up the box before warehouse labour or transport is ready.
- Losing seal/number control so empty return is rejected.
- Assuming weekends never count — check the specific tariff.
Worked example
An importer gates out a 40′ HC from KPT on Monday with three detention-free days for return of empty. Unstuffing at warehouse slips to Thursday; empty returns Friday. One day detention applies. Had the truck waited one more day inside terminal, demurrage might have applied instead — still a cost, but a different invoice line. Planning unstuff labour before gate-out is the real control.
How MTX helps
We align gate-out with warehouse labour and empty-return depot queues, and we separate demurrage vs detention on invoices so finance is not arguing the wrong charge. Export customers get the same discipline when empties are pulled early for factory stuffing. Operational tip: confirm empty-return depot congestion the morning of gate-out. A free warehouse slot means little if empties cannot be received the same day. Count weekends against the specific carrier tariff before you celebrate a Friday gate-out.

FAQ
- Is detention charged per container per day?
- Usually yes, on a daily (sometimes tiered) rate after free time. Confirm the carrier’s Pakistan local tariff for your equipment type.
- Who is responsible for detention on a CIF import?
- Incoterms allocate freight risk to destination differently than container free time. Detention after arrival is often for the party controlling pickup — clarify in your commercial deal and forwarder SOP.
- Can MTX hold containers at a warehouse to avoid detention?
- Warehousing can help workflow, but the carrier clock still runs while their box is out. Fast unstuff and empty return remain essential.
- Do LCL shipments have detention?
- LCL shippers usually do not hold the ocean carrier’s container; CFS demurrage/storage style fees at origin or destination are the analogous risk.
